Managing Data For Long Retention Periods: Requirements and Challenges
Several events in recent years have changed the requirements for retaining data from operational databases to long periods of time. Required retention periods have ballooned to many years, and in some cases, to many decades. This coupled with the rapid rise in data volumes and the importance of providing archived data on demand many years after it is created, has surfaced the need for companies to build a solid practice for archiving and managing business data from their online operational databases. The presentation covers the basics of an archiving methodology and a number of topics that require special consideration in building a database archiving practice. Topics covered are application independence, metadata independence, data authenticity, change management, storage management, and access control.

Title: Managing Your DB2 Storage Pools
While there has always been a justified focus on tuning DB2 Buffer pools, there are a number of other important storage pools used by DB2 for z/OS including the RID Pool, the EDM Pool and the SORT Pool. This presentation describes what information DB2 saves in each of these primary storage areas and explains how it’s used. Various methods for monitoring and analyzing storage pool usage to identify sizing and other problems will be discussed, as will the potential impact on Application and overall System Performance if they are sized incorrectly. The presentation also includes an explanation of the impact made by the introduction of 64 bit storage and the changes introduced in DB2 Version 8 for each of the Pools.

Null and Void? Dealing with Nulls in DB2
Nulls are one of the most controversial aspects of SQL database systems. On the one hand they seem to be useful as means to record missing information; on the other hand, they introduce three-valued logic and other difficulties into our applications. This presentation will delve into the various aspects of nulls, show some of the problems presented by nulls, and give advice on how best to use/avoid them.

  1. What is a Null?
  2. How DB2 Implements Nulls
  3. Nulls in General Practice
  4. Some of the Problems with Nulls
  5. How to Use/Avoid Nulls

  • Benefits
  • Creating partitioned tables
